Look at the workstation
The table should be prepared for the appointment rather than crowded with debris from the previous service. Used items should be removed. Clean implements and supplies should be stored separately from used ones.
Understand reusable and single-use items
Metal implements may be reusable when they are cleaned and processed according to the required procedure. Porous items such as many files, buffers, sanding bands, and toe separators generally cannot be treated in the same way and should be handled as single-use when appropriate.
Hand hygiene matters
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends looking for handwashing between clients and clean stations. Clients can also arrive with clean hands and avoid touching phone screens once nail preparation begins.
Product handling matters too
Bottles should be closed when not in use, and products should be used according to their labels. The FDA advises consumers to follow warnings and labeled directions and notes that good ventilation is important when nail products are used.

New York State’s nail-specialty inspection checklist includes separation of clean and used implements, covered waste containers, closed chemical bottles, handwashing facilities, and workplace protective supplies. These practical controls support a more organized service environment.
What cleanliness cannot tell you
A spotless-looking table does not prove that every hidden step was completed correctly. That is why clients should feel free to ask. At the same time, words such as “sterile” should be used accurately and backed by an appropriate process, not treated as a decorative marketing claim.

- Tell the technician about cuts, irritation, or previous reactions.
- Do not arrive with an active open wound in the service area.
- Ask how tools are handled when you want clarification.
- Speak up if a step feels painful.
- Seek medical advice for persistent nail or skin changes.
