A hard-gel refill is a maintenance appointment for an existing structured set. The goal is not simply to fill a visible gap near the cuticle. The technician must reassess the entire nail and rebuild balance as the product grows forward.
Why growth changes the structure
A fresh overlay places support in a specific area based on the nail’s length and shape. As the natural nail grows, that support moves forward. The back of the nail becomes thinner while the free edge carries more weight. Maintenance restores the intended balance.
What happens at a refill?
The technician first inspects each nail for lifting, cracks, product separation, and changes to the natural nail. Color and excess material are reduced. Any area that cannot remain safely attached is removed. The nail is then prepared, new hard gel is added, and the structure is refined before color.
When a refill may not be appropriate
- The product is lifting across a large area.
- Several nails have cracks that affect the structure.
- The existing material or system is unknown or incompatible.
- You want a major change in length or shape.
- There is pain, unusual discoloration, or another condition that should be evaluated before cosmetic service.
How often should you return?
Many clients plan structured-gel maintenance around the three- to four-week point, but growth rates differ. A shorter interval can make sense for very fast growth, long nails, frequent impacts, or early lifting. Waiting until the set feels unstable can turn routine maintenance into a repair appointment.
Can the shape change during a refill?
Small changes are often possible. A soft square can become squoval, or a medium almond can become shorter. A dramatic change may require more time or a new set because the existing structure was built for a different outline.
How to prepare
Keep the existing product in place. Do not peel or remove it at home. Send a clear photo if several nails are damaged, and share the salon or product information when your current set was done elsewhere. This helps reserve the right appointment length.
Refill or new extensions?
A refill preserves compatible existing length. A new extension appointment creates length and shape from the beginning. When in doubt, contact the studio with photos before booking.
